Oppose the Bike Ban

On Monday, July 12, 2010 the St. Charles County, Missouri council read a bill that would ban bicycling on certain state highways in the southwest corner of the county. After commentary from 14 members of the public and discussion of the issue by the council, the bill was tabled and its author, Councilman Joe Brazil, indicated that he would schedule a working session to further examine the issues in August. During the public comment period St. Louis Regional Bicycle Federation's executive director, Patty Vinyard, addressed the council noting the laws governing jurisdiction of the roads in question and access for roadway users. She pointed out some of the benefits of having bicycle tourism and bike routes in the area. She also noted that removing bicycles from the roads will not make them safer, but that enforcing existing laws would help a great deal. Finally, she noted that a ban would be counter to the new US DOT policy to increase bicycling and walking in all federally funded projects. This ban policy could jeaopardize the region's ability to secure federal transportation funding at a time when it is most needed.  
We are working with Missouri Bicycle & Pedestrian Federation to stop the ban.
